Ayurvedic Insight: How Ayurveda Understands Endometriosis
In the classical Ayurvedic texts, conditions resembling Endometriosis are described under categories such as “Vandhya Yoni Vyapad” (infertility due to disturbed vaginal/uterine function), “Artava Dushti” (disturbed menstrual flow), and “Granthi” or “Arbuda” (abnormal tissue growths or cysts).
You deserve more than just a diagnosis—you deserve understanding, depth, and lasting healing. In this blog, Dr. Bhragu Sharma, a master of classical Ayurveda, shares his profound insights into Endometriosis—not as a disease, but as a message from a woman’s body asking for balance.
Through his deep knowledge of doshas, dhatus, srotas, and emotional imprints, Dr. Sharma unveils the true roots of this disorder and how Ayurveda offers not just relief, but transformation.
“Vandhyatva yoni vyapad”
A pathological womb condition marked by chronic dysfunction, often rooted in disturbed doshic flow, emotional trauma, and dhatu-vitiation.
Key Doshas Involved:
1. Vata (Apana Vayu) – The Primary Aggravator
- Apana Vayu governs all downward and outward movement—menstruation, ovulation, childbirth, and elimination.
- When aggravated due to stress, overexertion, improper diet, or emotional suppression, it moves erratically or gets blocked.
- This leads to irregular, painful periods, clotting, and retrograde menstruation—a theory also supported by modern science in endometriosis.
Pitta – The Inflammation
Excess Pitta causes excessive bleeding, burning pain, and inflammatory growths.
It leads to Rakta Dhatu Dushti (impure blood tissue) and affects liver function—hindering estrogen metabolism.
Kapha – The Builder of Stagnant Growths
While less dominant, disturbed Kapha creates cysts, adhesions, fibrotic tissue, and “Ama” accumulation.
Kapha holds onto suppressed trauma and supports the physical structure of rogue tissues (similar to endometriomas or chocolate cysts).
Pathogenesis: The Disease Chain (Samprapti)
Agni Dushti (Weak digestion + metabolism)
↓
Ama Formation (Toxic waste from undigested food & emotions)
↓
Vata-Pitta vitiation (Apana & Ranjaka disturbance)
↓
Srotorodha (Blocked micro-channels of the reproductive tract)
↓
Artava Dushti (Impure menstrual blood, clotting, irregularity)
↓
Granthi or Arbuda Utpatti (Formation of tissue growths, adhesions)

Vandhyatva / Pain / Emotional Burnout
Why the Menstrual Cycle Turns into a Battlefield
The menstrual cycle in Ayurveda is a time of Apana Vayu cleansing—a sacred monthly reset. But in Endometriosis:
- The Apana pathway is blocked
- Ama creates stickiness and inflammation
- The uterus tries to expel, but the path is obstructed
- Trapped blood leads to pain, stagnation, and internal “bleeding into nowhere”
Hence, what should be a gentle purification becomes a battlefield—internally destructive and emotionally exhausting.
Emotional Imprints – The Unseen Cause
“Manasika hetu” (mental/emotional causes) are always considered in yoni vyapad.
In many women with Endometriosis, we often find:
- Deep emotional suppression (especially of grief, anger, sexual shame)
- Unresolved trauma related to femininity or abuse
- Feeling unsupported, hyper-independent, or “at war” with one’s own body
These unresolved energies lodge in the womb—the seat of Shakti, creating physical manifestations like tissue overgrowth, pain, or infertility.
Ayurvedic Healing Is Womb Remembrance
Our protocol at The Healing Lane – Anand Path doesn’t just treat the uterus.
We treat the root of disconnection—from self, body, and feminine flow.
This includes:
- Ama pachana – Herbal formulas to digest toxins
- Vata-Pitta- kafa balance – Regulate cycles, reduce pain, inflammation
- Yoni shuddhi & garbhashaya shodhan – Reproductive channel cleansing
- Womb-conscious Yoga & pranayama
- Heart-womb trauma release & self-compassion rituals
Because healing endometriosis is not just biological—it is deeply spiritual.
In Summary:
Endometriosis is the body’s cry to be heard, cleansed, and softened.
Ayurveda doesn’t suppress this cry—it listens, nurtures, and guides the womb back to balance.
